When Is a Toothache an Emergency?

Pain in your mouth can ruin an otherwise good day. To determine whether you need to see the dentist right away, rate your pain on the following scale:

Mild – A mild toothache that doesn’t particularly hurt, but is definitely present, usually does not necessitate an urgent dental visit. Floss between your teeth first, to dislodge any food particles that could be putting pressure on your tooth and causing the ache. You can also take ibuprofen or acetaminophen, per the medication’s instructions, for pain relief. Then, call our office to schedule an appointment if the pain does not subside and stay gone.

Nagging, but not constant – Pain that exceeds mild should also be treated by flossing, then taking an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory and pain relief medication. If your gums also hurt, rinse your mouth with a solution of one cup of warm (not hot) water with 1T of salt dissolved in it. Rinse, swish, and spit. Repeat until the solution is gone. If pain persists or intensifies over seven days, schedule an appointment based on your level of pain at the time of your call.

Constant, but not intense – The question to ask yourself is: Is your pain worsening? To start, floss and rinse with the saltwater solution described above. Next, take non-prescription pain relief medication. If the pain lasts for more than seven days or intensifies, call for an appointment. The more intense your pain, the more urgent your visit should be.

Intense and constant – cannot sleep or eat – This is the time to call us for an immediate visit with Dr. Chugg. Pain that keeps you from sleeping and eating means that something is truly wrong – something that flossing and rinsing with saltwater will not solve. Don’t delay, because most painful dental problems can become worse, causing more severe pain and requiring more invasive treatment, over time. A cracked tooth can split through and break off at the root. An infection can become an abscess and even enter your blood stream to cause health issues in other parts of your body. So, if you have persistent, intense pain, call us now at 480-563-0525 for an appointment today.

What Happens During a Same Day Dentistry Visit?

An emergency dental visit has one goal: to address the problem at hand. You’ll not have a comprehensive dental exam or cleaning at this appointment. Instead, the dentist will ask you about your pain – so if you have trouble speaking or feel too irritable to talk, bring someone with you if possible. We may need to take x-rays and photographs, if the cause of your toothache is not evident upon visual evaluation.

The dentist will then do all we can to resolve your pain. This may mean that you’ll require a filling or temporary crown placed at your visit. It could result in the need for a root canal. The dentist will explain what is necessary to resolve your pain immediately, and after treatment you will need a follow-up visit to make sure that you fully return to good health.

After your emergency visit, if you do not already have a general dentist whom you see twice a year for dental exams and cleanings, please schedule a preventive care visit with our office. Though some emergencies are not preventable, a bi-annual checkup and cleaning will go a long way toward ensuring that you maintain strong, healthy teeth that won’t fail and put you in another urgent, painful situation.
